  WORK SHIFTS:         7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.  (Monday through Friday)
DEPARTMENT:        Landfill
LOCATION:              Boone County Sanitary Landfill        1268 224th Lane        Boone
REPORTS TO:           Landfill Administrator
 
STARTING HOURLY RATE: $21.19/hour
 
 
JOB OBJECTIVES:
 
1. Will be a non-exempt full-time employee of Boone County. Will be hired by the Board of Supervisors and work under the supervision of the Boone County Landfill Administrator. 
2. Perform duties required to operate the Landfill in a safe and efficient manner.
3. Conform with all applicable Federal and State laws, local ordinances, facility regulations and the requirements of the Landfill Administrator or his/her designee.
4. Will be governed by the Boone County Handbook and applicable collective bargaining unit agreement.
 
This is practical work involving the operations and maintenance of the Boone County Recycling Transfer Station facility and recycling throughout Boone County.
Employee of this class is responsible for assisting in the operation of the Transfer Station facility in accordance with State and local requirements, the maintenance of all operational records, assisting in the practical work at the station and dealing with waste/recycling haulers.   Work is performed under the supervision of the Landfill Administrator
 
JOB FUNCTIONS:
 
Essential Functions:
 
1. Perform daily operations of the Boone County Landfill in receiving material for recycling or disposal and insure that it is unloaded and disposed of in the proper manner and location.
2. Perform maintenance of equipment.
3. Operate light to heavy equipment in loading and unloading material
4. Monitor and maintain the transfer station tipping floor 
5. Follow established safety protocols.
6. Additional duties as may be assigned by the Landfill Foreman and/or Landfill Administrator
7. Attend trainings/conferences as required or requested by Landfill Administrator
 
Additional Functions:
 
1. Function as a general laborer which includes:
a. Sorting recycling, snow removal, sweeping
b. Cutting and clearing of weeds, brush, and debris from Landfill. 
c. Picking up litter.
d. Performing of various manual labor tasks involved in the operation of the Boone County   
      Landfill and the Boone County Recycling Transfer Station.
2. Operate hand held two-way radio.
3. Operate weigh scale, record data and collect fees as may be required.                                     
                  4.  Assist with Household Hazardous Waste events and appointments.
 5.  Directs citizens in the correct disposal of recyclable items and non-recyclable items
               6.  Work in a team environment
               7.  Manage collection and distribution of all recycling programs including: residential and business 
                   recyclable materials, shingles, appliances, electronics, tires, and yard waste.

Required Physical Activities/Essential to job function:   Climbing stairs, balancing while walking on slippery surfaces, hiking over uneven terrain, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, pushing, pulling, finger dexterity, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
 
Physical Characteristics of Work:  Perform heavy manual labor (lifting up to 100lbs) under all types of weather conditions.
 
 ESSENTIAL JOB STANDARDS:
 
1. Communicate on 2-way radio.
2. Drive Vehicles (Valid Iowa Commercial Drivers License class B).
3. Operate construction and maintenance equipment.
4. Perform heavy manual labor (lifting up to 100 pounds) under all types of weather conditions.
5. Effectively communicate with the residents of Boone County and Landfill customers.
 
EQUIPMENT:
 
1. Automotive vehicles & UTV
2. Haul truck & Front end Loader
3. Skid steer, mower, snow blower
4. Technology – computer, smart phone, GPS
5. Other equipment as required.

CRITICAL SKILLS/EXPERTISE: Minimum:
1. Knowledge of automotive and construction equipment usage, maintenance and repair.
2. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within and outside the Department.
3. Ability to learn how to safely and effectively operate equipment used in a sanitary Landfill/Recycling Transfer Station
4. Ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License, or above, from the State of Iowa with tanker and air brake endorsements within six months of hire.
5. Mathematical ability to compute dumping costs.
6.   25-Hour OSHA/Hazardous Waste Handling
