BOONE COUNTY LANDFILL

The Boone County Landfill (BCL), located in the heart of Iowa, is proudly owned and operated by Boone County. The BCL not only provides sound disposal options, it is also charged with coordinating the solid waste management plan for Boone and Greene Counties (with the exception of Jefferson) as well as certain communities in Calhoun and Dallas Counties. The landfill accepts garbage, construction & demolition wastes, yard waste, tires, scrap metal, appliances, batteries and household and CESQG hazardous waste.

May 1, 2010 marked the 40th anniversary of operations for the Boone County Landfill.

The Boone County Landfill is a Subtitle D compliant facility permitted by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (http://www.iowadnr.gov) (permit number: 08-SDP-01-75P.) The landfill serves a population of 120,000+ and disposes of approximately 50,000 to 55,000 tons of garbage each year. This award winning facility has been recognized as one of the best operated landfills in Iowa.

Service
Area of the Boone County Landfill:

The State of Iowa uses solid waste planning areas as a strategy to proactively manage solid wastes generated within Iowa. Planning areas consist of a grouping of cities and counties formed around the use of a municipal solid waste landfill. The Boone County Landfill and its service area are partners with the City of Ames Resource Recovery System Together, these two service areas form the Central Iowa Waste Management Planning Area.

The Landfill serves as the primary disposal facility for all of Boone County (except Sheldahl); Greene County (except the City of Jefferson); the Cities of Bouton, Granger and Woodward in Dallas County; and the Cities of Farnhamville, Lohrville and Somers in Calhoun County.

The Boone County Landfill serves as the secondary disposal facility for Ames and Story County. Residents and businesses located in Story County must first call the Landfill at (515) 433-0591 to receive authorization prior to delivering a load. Authorization will only be given if the load is first rejected by the waste facilities located in Story County.

The planning area diverts approximately 55% of its waste away from landfill disposal as calculated by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.  Our planning area is just one of three that have met the State of Iowa goal of 50% landfill diversion.
