Iowa law requires that a person be a registered voter to participate in an election. There are several ways you may register – in person at the Auditor’s Office (office location & hours), through the mail, or at your polling place on election day. You also can register at driver’s license stations and public assistance agencies.

If you have questions about voter registration, you may call the Boone County Auditor’s office at 515-433-0502 or check the Secretary of State’s frequently asked questions (FAQ) page.

For Primary and General elections, Boone County is divided into fifteen voting districts or precincts. The Secretary of State’s website has a search feature to determine your polling place.  For city and school elections, your polling place may be different. That information is printed on your voter registration card, or you may call the Boone County Auditor’s office at 515-433-0502.

Absentee voting logoVoting Absentee

Voters may cast an absentee ballot in any election. A written absentee ballot request must be received from the voter for each election and each voter must sign their own request. You may fill out an official absentee request form or you may submit a written request on a piece of paper no smaller than 3x5 inches. This request must contain the following information:
• Name
• Date of Birth
• Address (this must be a street address, not a PO Box)
• Mailing address for the absentee ballot, if different from the address where you are registered
• Political Party affiliation – for Primary elections only
• Name and/or Date of election (e.g. General Election, November 6, 2012)
• Signature and date

You may vote absentee by mail, or in person at the Auditor’s Office. You may not take a ballot home with you. Iowa law requires that you either vote in the Auditor’s Office, or have the ballot sent to you by mail. If you receive your ballot by mail, you may either return the voted ballot by mail (return postage is already paid) or return it in person to the Auditor’s office. For more information on voting absentee, you may visit the Secretary of State absentee site  or call the Boone County Auditor’s office at 515-433-0502.
