Description:

Heavy Equipment operator for the Boone County Landfill located at 1268 224th Ln., Boone, Iowa. The Heavy Equipment Operator will operate and maintain heavy, motorized equipment used in earth moving, trash processing, and composting operations in a safe and efficient manner. Essential Job Functions:

1. Perform daily operations of the Boone County Landfill in receiving material for disposal and insure that it is unloaded and disposed of in the proper manner and location.

2. Perform maintenance of equipment.

3. Operate light to heavy equipment in: unloading, leveling and burying material brought into the Landfill; soil excavation; repairing or constructing interior roads; and maintaining drainage areas.

4. Operate roll-off truck as needed for hauling water/leachate and roll-off boxes

5. Follow established safety protocols.

6. Additional duties as may be assigned by the Landfill Foreman and/or Landfill Administrator

7. Attend trainings/conferences as required or requested by Landfill Administrator

8. Function as a general laborer which includes:

a. Shoveling and spreading of rock, gravel and/or snow.

b. Cutting and clearing of weeds, brush, and debris from Landfill.

c. Picking up litter.

d. Performing of various manual labor tasks involved in the operation of the Boone County Landfill and the Boone County Recycling Transfer Station.

9. Operate hand held two-way radio.

10. Operate weigh scale, record data and collect fees as may be required.

11. Assist with Household Hazardous Waste events and appointments.

12. Assist with Annual Dragoon River Romp.

13. Work in a team environment


Essential Qualifications:

1. Knowledge of automotive and construction equipment usage, maintenance and repair.

2. Knowledge of principles and practices used in the operation of a solid waste landfill.

3. Knowledge of materials, methods and techniques used in construction and maintenance activities.

4. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within and outside the Department.

5. Ability to learn how to safely and effectively operate equipment used in a sanitary landfill.

6. Ability to obtain a Landfill Operator's Certification from Department of Natural Resources, State of Iowa within one year of hire.

7. Ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License, or

above, from the State of Iowa with tanker and air brake endorsements within six months of hire.

8. Mathematical ability to compute dumping costs.

9. 25-Hour OSHA/Hazardous Waste Handling

Education and Licenses:

1. Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.

2. Valid State of Iowa CDL with tanker and air brake endorsements.

3. Mechanical experience or aptitude.
