POSITION TITLE: Grounds and Maintenance Technician

FLSA: PRN – as needed

Job Summary:

The Grounds and Maintenance Technician position reports to the Building and Grounds Maintenance Director. This position will mainly be responsible for maintaining the grounds of the Boone County Government Campus which includes the Boone County Courthouse, Law Enforcement Center, Human Services Building, and the Boiler/Maintenance Building. This position will also perform occasional maintenance work as needed. This position is governed by the Boone County Employee Handbook and applicable federal and state laws.

WORK SHIFT

This is a non-exempt position meaning it is eligible for overtime. The Grounds and Maintenance Technician’s hours will vary based on the season. This position is subject to call-ins for emergencies and inclement weather. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

· Works alongside the Director to provide care for the grounds of the Boone County Government Campus. The Campus includes lawns, trees, sidewalks, parking lots, and flowerbeds.

· Responsible for snow and ice removal from Campus sidewalks, parking lots, and the freedom rock plaza.

· Assists with the maintenance and care of departmental equipment including, but not limited to: riding mower, truck, tools, ToolCat, snow blowers, weed eaters, chain saws, and other equipment.

· May provide cleaning of all buildings and grounds in the Boone County Government Campus at the direction of the County Auditor. This includes all areas in the buildings such as offices, restrooms, hallways and basement.

· Must wear a steel or composite toed boot while working. 

· Attire can be relaxed, but professional. 

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

· Iowa Driver’s License.

· High School diploma or GED.

· Willing and able to operate a lawn mower and snow blower.

· Willing and able to use a snow shovel and other grounds care equipment.

· Willing and able to work in inclement weather.

· Self-starter and internally motivated to perform the tasks needed with minimal direction and supervision.

· Must pass a criminal background check, medical examination, and drug testing.

PREFERRED SKILLS

· Experience with fire monitoring systems and ability to change sprinkler heads as needed.

· Perform lighting upkeep, service and maintenance.

· Experience with the repair of institutional style plumbing fixtures.

· Door and door hardware repair and installation.

· Experience with building maintenance and safety practices.

ESSENTIAL PHYISICAL REQUIREMENTS 

Required physical activities/essential to the position:  

Climbing stairs, balancing while walking on slippery surfaces, hiking over uneven terrain, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, pushing, pulling, finger dexterity, grasping, work from platforms up to 20 foot above floor level, carry equipment and items, ability to move items weighing between 60 and 80 lbs., climbing on 12 foot step ladders, and able to work in prolonged inclement weather. Reasonable accommodation requests will be considered, if needed. 

ESSENTIAL EQUIPMENT

The following list is not exhaustive, but does represent the types of equipment that the department utilizes:

· Low pressure steam boiler.

· Lawn and garden tractor with mower and snow blade.

· Stationary emergency generator.

· Automotive vehicles and Bobcat Toolcat.

· Floor care equipment (wet vac, mopping etc.)

· Chain saw.

· Circular table saw.

· Power tools.
