POSITION TITLE: Office Assistant/Clerk

WORK SHIFT: 

This position has been classified as FLSA Non-exempt. Normal work hours are 8:00am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday. When an election is in progress, extra hours will be required.

POSITION OBJECTIVES:

1. Position is a full-time employee of Boone County. Position reports to the Boone County Auditor.

2. Assist Auditor and other staff in administration of office according to Iowa Code Section 331 (specifically section 331.502-512) 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

· Assists with all duties within the Auditor’s Office such as: elections, real estate/drainage, accounts payable, payroll processing, board secretary, human resources, and other duties as assigned.

· Assist all members of the public that come to the Auditor’s office or those that call with questions or issues.

· Perform interdepartmental work with other departments in the Courthouse, Law Enforcement Center, Health and Human Services, etc.

CRITICAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Education

High school degree supplemented with job related experience. 

Experience

· One or more years of office experience.

· Ability to use a computer, phone system, and willingness to learn software systems.

POSITION STANDARDS

Complexity 

Requires ability to: sort and file a variety of material with accuracy following a designated but technical system; learn and apply departmental procedures; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; ability to establish work procedures; ability to operate standard office equipment and related hardware and software; proficient in word and excel; read technical materials and understand implications; ability to post accounts and to perform mathematical computations with speed and accuracy; make routine bookkeeping entries and fill out business forms; spell, punctuate and use proper grammar; meet public and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public; define problems and formulate steps for resolutions; perform various office support functions with speed and accuracy; ability to meet certain deadlines such as election deadlines.

Mental/Visual Demands

Position demands attention in maintaining accurate records. Work under pressure with interruptions and challenging deadlines.

Physical Demands

This work requires the level of activity that is required for normal office work (sitting, standing, light walking, speaking, answering phones, etc.) Occasionally lifting up to 50 lbs. or exerting force may be required when dealing with election equipment. 

Accountability

Accuracy is important to avoid errors in recording transactions. Users of data could catch errors, if any, after the fact. Procedures are also in place to check on work output. Be reliable, responsible, and dependable in fulfilling obligations. Maintain a high level of confidentiality and personal high level of integrity.

Contacts

Position requires regular daily contact with others such as the public, other county offices and vendors. 

Supervision

Position receives supervision and assignments from the Auditor, Deputy Auditor, or other staff members. 

Environment

Office environment.

Hazards/Stress

No physical hazards. Walk-ins and phone calls are distracters which change the work pace. Sometimes under pressure of deadlines.
