NOTICE OF CIVIL SERVICE ENTRANCE EXAMINATION FOR BOONE COUNTY DEPUTY SHERIFF
Boone County, Iowa is taking applications for Deputy Sheriff. We are looking for both uncertified and certified applicants. Boone County is located in central Iowa, offering a rural lifestyle with camping, fishing, biking, museums, and scenic train rides, while being just a short drive away from several metro areas such as Ames and Des Moines, Iowa.

UNCERTIFIED APPLICANTS AND OUTSIDE OF IOWA MUST TEST
IOWA CERTIFIED OFFICERS MAY ATTEND PHYSICAL AGILITY TESTING
Boone County Sheriff's Office will be conducting physical agility testing for the Deputy Sheriff position on May 31, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. at Goeppinger Field, Boone High School, located at 504 Division St, Boone, IA 50036. All candidates should arrive at the Boone County Sheriff's Office by 8:30 a.m. for initial check-in.
Following the physical agility test, ALL candidates will reconvene at the Boone County Law Enforcement Center, 1019 W Mamie Eisenhower Ave, Boone, IA, to complete the written POST exam and participate in a civil service interview with the Boone County Civil Service Board. All participants must present a valid State Driver's License or State-issued Identification Card from their current state of residence prior to testing.
The testing process will consist of three components: a physical agility test, the written POST exam, and an interview conducted by the Civil Service Board.
All applications must be submitted no later than 4:30 p.m. on May 19, 2025. Applicants who have completed the POST exam within the last 12 months and received a qualifying score may choose to submit their previous score or retake the exam. If the exam is retaken, only the most recent score will be used for evaluation.
If you are unable to attend our scheduled testing but have successfully completed the physical agility test with another Iowa law enforcement agency within the past 12 months, please inform us. We may accept those results temporarily, but you will still be required to pass Boone County's physical agility test at a later date before a final hiring decision is made.
- Starting pay for non-certified applicants is $33.35/hr. (wage-top out in two years)
- Certified applicants starting wage is $37.27/hr. (wage top out in six months)
- Deputies top out at $39.23/hr. per the union contract July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2025
These amounts will be increasing 3.5% effective July 1, 2025.
