About the County Attorney

Matt Speers was born and raised in Iowa. He attended Iowa State University and graduated in 2009 receiving Bachelor of Arts degrees in both Psychology and Political Science. From there, Matt Speers went on to Drake University Law school graduating with a juris doctorate in 2012. He is admitted to practice law in the State of Iowa and the Southern District of Iowa.

Matt was drawn to the law from an early age. He began his work in the legal field as a clerk in a private firm as an undergraduate. In law school, Matt interned with the Polk County Attorney’s Office for his entire 3 rd year of law school. After law school, Matt passed the bar in 2012 and continued to clerk for the private firm until he received his first job as a prosecutor with Jackson County Iowa. After a brief stint there, Matt returned to northwest Iowa and served as an Assistant County Attorney for Buena Vista County from 2013 through 2015 before coming to Boone County.

Matt Speers began his service to Boone County as an Assistant County Attorney in February of 2015. Matt served as an assistant until being appointed as the County Attorney in January of 2021. Matt Speers also served in the Iowa National Guard from 2009-2005, in an artillery unit based out of Algona, IA.
